The Many Ways Of Being Romantic
August 11th, 2009, Posted by Eddy AnkrettWhat does being romantic mean? To some it’s all about candlelit dinners, walking in the moonlight, or remembering anniversaries with appropriate gifts. Romance can be all those things, but it isn’t confined to them. We tend to get our images of romance from the movies. Hollywood has a lot to answer for, it seems sometimes. Their image of being romantic is certainly not wrong, but it usually stops short of showing the many ways of being romantic.
One dictionary definition of a romantic is, “a soulful or amorous idealist.” That sounds somehow esoteric, but it could define some romantics. Most of us don’t go that far. We just do the things we do in the hope that our partners appreciate us for what we are. Being attentive and appreciative of each other, and demonstrating it in simple ways can be as romantic as anyone needs it to be.
The true romantic exploits the small things in a relationship. The extravagant gifts of diamond bracelets, the odd tiara or two and a jet flight to Rio is not the kind of thing that true romance is made of. That’s showing off. Most of us can’t afford such things and this is why attention to the smaller things in life is important.
The man who remembers an anniversary is not necessarily being romantic; he’s just doing his duty. If he can remember the date of a football fixture, then he can easily remember an anniversary. It isn’t rocket science. It’s the small gestures made freely and without elaborate planning that can impress the most. They come straight from the heart and are worth ten jet flights to Rio, or at least they are to those who truly appreciate romance.
When was the last time you wrote a love letter to the one you love? When was the last time you received a love letter from the one you love? Letters are easy to write. They cost little to post, but they can be appreciated above many things costing much, much more. We all love to get a letter. Opening a letter, wondering what it says, and savouring every last word as you read it can be an enlightening experience. If the letter is from someone you love and who loves you also, then the experience is so much the better.
Just listening to the one you love, hearing what he or she has to say, can be romantic. It shows that you appreciate the other person. It shows that you care about the things they feel – the things that make them happy and the things that bother them in life. Spending time together for no particular reason can be enormously satisfying when no demands are made or expected. It can be romantic for no particular reason other than it simply is.
There are dozens of ways to be romantic that don’t cost the earth, or don’t make use of a flamboyant exhibition. The expression of romance is most often a simple thing. It is a deeply felt thing, and a deeply experienced thing. In short – it’s romantic.
