The 5 Biggest Turnoffs on a Date

March 4th, 2009, Posted by Tina Wallace

I know we can all think of plenty of turnoffs that might happen on a date, and we certainly don’t want to do any of them either. Sometimes turnoffs can happen because a person is unaware that it makes the other person cringe. Some turnoffs are obvious and some less so. Here then are 5 of the biggest turnoffs on a date that should definitely be avoided.

1. Sex. You may be thinking it, but do not ever mention it. This will most likely kill a first date and guarantee that there will never be a second date. Not mentioning sex includes not mentioning anything that is even a slight bit risque. That joke you heard at work may be hilariously funny to you, but if it includes a mention of sex in any form, or even if it only suggests it, do not tell it on a date. It will only cause embarrassment and ruin the date completely!

2. Keep the mobile phone switched off. It is extremely irritating for the other person to have to sit patiently while you answer a phone call. This is especially true for guys. They will be wondering if it’s another guy who is calling you. The same goes for text messages, of course. No one wants to sit across from his or her date and have to watch them smile at receiving a message. And of course, never send a text while you are on a date. That is just being plain inconsiderate.

3. Never mention a previous relationship. Guys especially can’t stand the perceived competition. A date should be for the person you are with, and for them alone. Keep all others out of it if possible. Focus your attention on the other person and show an interest in his or her life. Make them the centre of your attention and they will do the same back.

4. It shouldn’t have to be mentioned, but good personal hygiene is essential on a date. Getting a whiff of the other person’s body odour is possibly the biggest turnoff of all on a date. And the same goes for your breath. Brush your teeth well and use a good mouth wash before going out. Wash your hair and your body and wear clean smart clothes. Make your own personal hygiene the highest priority there is when going out on a date.

5. Don’t ever put the other person down on a date. You may think you are making a simple joke, but if it can be construed as hurtful in any way, it will not go down well. This includes making generalised comments about the opposite sex. Neither one wants to hear that kind of thing, true or not, so don’t do it. Be respectful of the other person and the gender they represent at all times.

There are other things that are a big turnoff on a date. These include obvious things like belching, breaking wind, scratching your private parts (probably confined to the guys), picking your nose, or leering at the other person with obvious and unconcealed lust (also probably confined to the guys). The best thing to do on a date is never do anything that you would not like the other person doing in front of you.
