Old Fashioned Love Letters. Time for a Comeback?

January 26th, 2009, Posted by Eddy Ankrett

In the world of romance, the name, Jake Bronstein, may not be one that immediately springs to mind. But in a world where people communicate through mobile ‘phone text messages, Twitter tweet messages online, and through social networking sites such as MySpace and FaceBook, maybe it’s time that people listened to what Jake has to say about romantic communications.

Jake, who has a somewhat chequered past, bemoans the near-death of the old-fashioned love letter. He believes that we should not forget how it feels to hold a simple sheet of paper that someone has taken the time and effort to write words of affection on. He believes it’s difficult to tie up a bundle of love text messages to keep as a sacred memento, and of course he’s right!

Jake has taken it on himself to write one thousand love letters to complete strangers. His blog is inviting people to send him their address (physical, old-fashioned, postal address that is) and he will send on a love letter of his own writing. It’s a simple idea that has caught the attention and the imagination of hundreds of people, all who have taken him up on his unusual offer.

Apparently it all started with an old friend sending him a letter in which she expressed her love for him. He was so impressed and moved that he decided to let everyone, well, 1,000 people at least, feel the same way.

On his blog Jake writes, “It’s been years since I’ve gotten a love letter, and just the act of opening it (we’re not talking email here people) made me happy. Really happy. You could even say it warmed my heart.”

Unlike sending out 1,000 love emails, which would probably be considered spam anyway, it’s going to cost Jake around $700 – about £500 – just to mail out his 1,000 love letters. That does take a bit of dedication to see through.

It seems that Jake’s hope in doing all this is to encourage people everywhere to take up the old art of writing love letters. The Post Office would be delighted no doubt, and it’s likely that the recipients of the love letters would be delighted too.

In a world where young people have taken to flirting on virtual places like MySpace, wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could be inspired enough to take up letter writing to express themselves?

You don’t have to be a great writer to write a real love letter. You just need to know how to make the necessary marks, then how to fold a sheet of paper and place it in an envelope, adding a stamp. Then it’s a simple matter of taking it to a mail box, posting it, and the Post Office will do the rest.

People will always move with the times. Texting and participating in social networks are the things that are cutting edge now. But isn’t there something timeless about a love letter? Isn’t there something more romantic and lasting? After all, you can’t tie up a bundle of text messages or emails to keep in a bottom drawer forever.
