More soaps please, we’re British
January 15th, 2009, Posted by Lizzie Creedy SmithBritain is a nation that spends twice as much time watching television soap operas than having sex, according to a survey commissioned by Mates Condoms. A partner who thinks about getting frisky while the other partner’s favourite TV soap is being screened will probably be well out of luck. It seems we value the pretend-life situations that the soaps provide more than the real-life ones we have at our fingertips just for the asking!
This is a sad situation and a fully preventable one too. Perhaps it’s a sign of the times that we are living more and more in a virtual world, but it’s something that perhaps we should be doing something about when one out of every four people told the survey that they would indeed spurn the advances of their partner if they chose to do so during the time they watched a soap show.
People of both sexes have always used fantasy to enhance their sex lives. That’s something that’s not about to stop. But when it gets to the point where fantasy takes over, and actually becomes preferable to the real thing, then perhaps something is basically wrong. Mates, the condom makers, have decided to take advantage of this situation. They have started a new daytime soap that has sex between several fictional couples as its primary focus.
The soap, however, is not on TV, but rather online. Mates claim that as their survey shows that most Britons look to their favourite soap heroes and heroines for sexual titillation and inspiration, why not make one that really gives them what they want. The thinking seems to be that they will then be so overpowered by the intensity of the situation that they will seek out a partner to recreate what the online soap has delivered. And of course, they may need a condom as well…
Perhaps the approach taken by Mates is a good one. Certainly it can’t be healthy that so many people prefer a fake situation on TV, acted out by a bunch of paid actors, to the real thing. This is especially so when another report tells us that the storylines in most soap operas do not reflect real life accurately. What is it then that we are seeking?
Presumably the great British public is seeking a form of escape. Perhaps we are trying to escape from monotony and boredom, responsibility and obligation. Soap operas are compelling and fascinating. We can live our lives through the antics of others, following their ups and downs in a daily merry-go-round of fictionalised tinsel fantasy.
It is therefore to the people who still have a great relationship with their chosen partner that we must turn. They are the best hope for the future. They are living normal lives in a way that makes some sense. Are you one of them? I certainly hope so – for your sake.
