Making It Happen Offline
February 2nd, 2010, Posted by Eddy AnkrettSo you’re thrilled about taking online dating to the next step – finally meeting him or her after that whole virtual relationship. But how are you going to make it happen once the plugs have been pulled?
1) Remember that you still don’t know the person fully. Though you may have been online dating for over 2 months, or a year, keep in mind that, you have only met virtually, not in person. What if the person turns out to be the complete opposite person you’ve been emailing all this time? He or she might be totally clueless when it comes to coming in contact face-to-face. He or she might be having a hard time expressing him or herself. If things don’t turn out the way you expected them to be, it won’t hurt to take a slower pace. Do not ignore this instinct. Politely explain to your date that you’d like to give it a little more time. Also respect your partner’s apprehensions.
2) It is advisable to talk on the phone before the actual meeting. Set up as many phone conversations as possible before going for the real thing. After all that typing and reading, it’s time to get to know the person again, but now by talking and listening. The conversation might give you a better judgment with regards to your relationship. This could also be your basis for determining where the relationship should be heading.
3) Secure the first date. Be sure to go public and at a reasonable time when you meet up. Never accept a ride or go back to the person’s place. If going out of town to meet, still, do not give out information about your hotel and do the booking yourself. Telling a friend about your plans would help if anything goes wrong. Carry a mobile phone if possible.
4) No pressure. Avoid intense conversation. Use this time to discover more of that person. Don’t spend the entire day together. A cup of coffee or one simple activity is good enough, besides if things work out as you wanted, you can always extend. If your date is a bit shy, try to initiate conversation, he or she could open up to you. But if you feel uncomfortable, then try to leave the situation as soon as possible.
5) Put your best behavior on. You want a good first impression on your date. He could be the man you’ve been waiting for all this time. Be friendly and flash your best smile. If you’re unreceptive, don’t expect another round. Stay calm and remain confident. Showing your date that you’re even better than that cyber prince or princess he knew online will definitely get you a second date. Being a good conversationalist would also help to keep the whole pace of the date going, but don’t talk too much, hear your date out also. Lastly, remember to enjoy and show him or her if this is what you mean.
