Learn from the Regretful Dates

November 2nd, 2009, Posted by Eddy Ankrett

We have talked about memorable dates. Now though, it would be interesting to see what dating regrets people have to share and hopefully, be given advice on how to avoid them.

Dating a married person: This is actually a no-brainer as anyone will tell you that this is a big fat NO! Not only will you be wrecking a marriage, you will be sending your dignity up the river. Besides, do you really want to spend time with a person who’s heart and mind are divided between you and his/her spouse?

What if…: This usually involves regretting not having asked that person out on a date when the opportunity was there. Dwelling on ‘what ifs’ is unproductive. When the opportunity presents itself again, grab the chance and ask that person you’ve been eyeing out for a date. The worst that could happen is that your invitation is declined. But at least you tried. By taking that all-important first step, you save yourself from more ‘what ifs’ and regrets in the future.

Dating the wrong person for the wrong reasons: Not only are you dating a person you don’t like, you’re actually using that person for your own self-interest.

My career comes first: The world has become so fast-paced that people are often married to their jobs. Before they know it, life and love has passed them by. This is especially true for women since they have their “biological clock” to think about which ticks away by the day. Those millions can wait; love may not.

Leaving someone you were in love with: Although you may not have realised it at the time—due to circumstances like too many fights or whatever reason that drove you to break it off–, you suddenly realise that you love the person all along. Trouble is, I’ts too late; the other person has closed the door and moved on, leaving you in the cold.

Not being nicer to the person when you were together: This could be as simple as being more courteous, remembering birthdays to giving more importance to the person and not letting your self-centred ways dominate the relationship. Well, stop kicking yourself and do better next time.

Dating is actually hard enough without having to live with regrets. So when opportunity knocks, open the door for it may not come again.
