Is the honeymoon over?
November 11th, 2008, Posted by Lizzie Creedy SmithYour wedding, the most important and special day of your life; planning goes on for months, if not years, all friends and family come together, and a fantastic holiday at the end for you and your spouse, right? Well, according to various research done by travel insurance companies, wrong!
With the rising cost of weddings, and most people feeling the squeeze of the credit crunch couples are having to cut out one of the best parts of the wedding…the honeymoon. Many newly-weds are now only having a few days away after the wedding in what is becoming known as a mini-moon. Longer, more traditional honeymoons are becoming less frequent as couples can’t afford them or can’t take the time off work to get away for longer.
Most couples that are having mini-moons as opposed to a honeymoon have said that they do intend to have a more proper honeymoon within the first year or so of marriage but that they need to wait until the expenditure of the wedding itself has been recovered. Around 22% of couples delay their honeymoon until well after the wedding itself and one in three couples go away for just 2 or 3 nights directly after their wedding.
So is this an enormous shame and break with tradition or is it simply an appropriate move with the times?
Personally, I can see both sides of the argument. The cost of weddings is so steep that I can easily see why people struggle to afford a long, luxurious holiday after the expense of a wedding and I can see the appeal of wanting to prolong the wedding by having a delayed honeymoon. However, on the other hand I can see why a long holiday is a perfect start to a long and happy future together and appreciate the importance of starting your married life with something special rather than getting straight back into the normal mundanity of life.
