Guys, Whatever Happened To Chivalry?

June 16th, 2009, Posted by Eddy Ankrett

Perhaps your are too young to have heard of chivalry, or to fully understand what it really means. That’s fine, it is a bit of an old-fashioned concept. It conjures up images of gallant knights riding snow-white horses wearing shining armour in the middle ages. Hmmm… Not too romantic an image, is it? Well, chivalry isn’t really dead, and it certainly shouldn’t be either. For all you guys out there, I’m willing to bet that your girl would love to be the recipient of a bit of chivalry.

You can perhaps blame the demise of chivalry on the rise of feminism. I’m sure that got a lot of attention from certain people, but it’s still true. The basic concept of feminism is fine, but sometimes it goes too far. What’s wrong with a guy wanting to open a door for a girl? It isn’t patronising when it’s done in the right spirit. It has romance, and caring, and thoughtfulness all wrapped up in one. Surely any girl would like to be pampered by someone who really cares and knows how to show it in style.

Yes, the simple act of opening a door shows the girl that he is a gentleman. It comes straight out of a 1940s movie. It was usually followed by him lighting a cigarette for two, but since smoking is so unacceptable these days, perhaps that one is best left alone. But guys, you could buy her some flowers occasionally. Even a single rose stem says more than a thousand word if presented properly.

If you are still unsure that all this chivalry thing is worth it, consider this: the song, “I Need A Hero” was very popular with girls, and still is. Why? Maybe it’s because most girls need a hero, if only secretly. Maybe they don’t say it openly, but inside they love the idea of being whisked off their feet by a dashing hero. You could be that hero for her, and it will work too.

Don’t treat the girl as someone who is fragile and needing constant help. That’s being patronising. She is perfectly capable of doing everything she needs done herself. It’s just that having a hero who wants to do the little things makes her feel special. She’ll gladly let you do them too as long as you don’t cross the line of taking control. Be assertive, but don’t be controlling. Be the man, but remember the girl. She will probably love letting you think that you are the powerful one, but never forget that she’s probably really the one with the most power!

Being a chivalrous gentleman is a good thing. It’s kind of going back to basics, to a time when men were men, and women were women. Life wasn’t really any better, just better defined in some ways. Try it and see for yourself. You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised. And don’t forget to tell her you love her occasionally too. That’s what a gentleman who understands chivalry would do.
