Flirting
October 23rd, 2009, Posted by Eddy AnkrettWhen the word flirting is mentioned, it somehow gives out mixed signals.
But in reality, it is very much a part of dating. Flirting is giving out signals that you like someone. These signals come in the form of body language, eye contact or the like.
Flirting however, becomes “dirty” or gets a bad wrap when it threatens infidelity—you or your partner are habitual flirts and thus, despite having someone in your life, you will still intentionally try to attract other people. Uncool, don’t you think?
So how can you tell if someone is flirting with you? Or even better, what are the right ways to let that man or woman at the party know that you are attracted to them? One very good indicator that someone is flirting with you is what is known as “mirroring”—when someone copies your every movement while maintaining eye contact.
Here are some things you may want to look out for or, even try out yourself:
The Eyes: Eye contact is the key. This could be combined with dilated pupils, arched eyebrows, rapid eye movement, blinking or maintaining eye contact longer than usual. Then of course, there is good old winking.
The Hair: Women love this trick. It usually involves playing or stroking their hair or even maintaining eye contact while doing so. Even men “brush” their hair to get noticed.
The Mouth: A smile can bring out the best in us so smile and flash those pearly whites. Then there are the lips – puckering of lips in a kissing motion or, touching the lips and teeth with the tongue are big giveaways.
Body Language: Actions speak louder than words, so your body language counts a lot. This ranges from the copying of your posture (there goes that mirroring thing again), pushing the chest forward while maintaining eye contact, leaning towards you while holding a gaze, having either open or crossed legs while facing you, or the age old showing off some flesh be it the arms or thighs.
The Touch: This can be either reaching out to touch you at every opportunity possible or, playing with your hands.
Speech: Words are still very powerful—no matter what actions say. So look out for mirroring of your tone of voice or speed by which you talk, lots of laughter, and questioning tones.
Just remember, dating and flirting do mix. Just relax and let things flow if and when it happens.
