Blind Dating

October 23rd, 2009, Posted by Eddy Ankrett

Admit it, you’re curious about this dating thing called blind dates—that’s assuming of course that you haven’t already been out on one.

This could stem from sheer curiosity to your best friend setting you up on one this weekend.

Since you’re clueless or scared that this might just be another disaster waiting to happen, take heart. Here are some “blind date basics” to bear in mind:

First of all, be open: No matter how much info your friend gives about your blind date, don’t form any expectations. Remember, this could lead to disappointment. Don’t judge by looks alone too. Who knows, the nerdy guy or country lass may just turn out to be a blast!

Keep it short: Actually, that’s keep it short but sweet—if you like him/her. Set it up for dinner or coffee. This could work both ways—giving you the option to split should you find him a toad or become your cue for that second date.

The great escape: This only applies if you find the date to be a disaster. Usually planned in advance, you can have a friend call you reminding you of that previous engagement that you “forgot” or some other excuse. If you do like him/her, then simply tell your friend to “bug off”,in a nice way of course but well, they’ll get the picture.

Being yourself: Age-old wisdom of this advice always works. This may just be a casual date but who knows, he/she may just like you or heck, may become one of your bestfriends…you never can tell.

Safety first: Remember, you don’t know the person—even if he/she is a good friend of your friend. Safety in numbers, they say so why not take a friend along or “run into them” after a few minutes (mobile technology works wonders!). Or if you’ll be alone, tell someone the exact details and keep your mobile close by just in case.

Footing the bill: Dutch treat? Or chivalry reigns (guys pay)? Whatever the case, make it clear from the start lest an embarrassing situation comes into play.

Goodbyes: This can be quite weird for anyone on a blind date really. Rule of thumb: be honest.

Just some tips to take note of when blind dating. You may have some tips of your own. But the important thing—just as in everything else involving dating–have fun.
