5 Tips For a Safer Online Dating Experience

March 17th, 2009, Posted by Tina Wallace

Online dating has certainly come of age. It is an ever-growing industry that gets more and more popular as time goes on. People of all ages are turning to online dating as an easy and highly effective way of meeting someone they can have a meaningful relationship with. However, there are pitfalls that should be avoided. Here are 5 tips for a safer online dating experience to make your online dating even better.

1. Pay for your online dating. The free sites may well be just fine, and you may find the person of your dreams there for free, but experience shows that the most reputable and most trusted online dating sites charge for their services. It’s not as if they charge the earth though, so always choose carefully, pay and expect to get a high quality service in return. If there are any shady characters lurking around hoping to prey on the unwary, you are much more likely to come across them on a free dating site. Pay every time!

2. Hold back on giving out too much personal information. Yes, you do have to provide personal details, but don’t gush too much. Supplying your home telephone number along with you name may not be a very smart thing to do. There are ways around this you can use to protect yourself better. Use email or instant messaging to begin with. Don’t give out your personal email though, but choose a free one from Yahoo or Hotmail. Hold back a little bit until you know where you stand, but don’t be unfriendly either.

3. Listen to your initial instincts. There’s always a little voice inside you that tells you whether or not something is a good idea. Listen to it when you meet someone on an online dating site. Don’t be taken in by hype and excitement. Look behind the scenes as much as you can and try to be objective about how you rate a person. There’s plenty of time to get romantic later if it all works out. If something doesn’t feel quite right, don’t try to make it be all right, for it probably isn’t.

4. When you have finally decided that meeting a person is the next logical move, always arrange to meet in a public place where there are plenty of people. This is simple and obvious insurance against the remote possibility that you are about to meet a maniac. The meeting will most likely go just fine and you will probably have a great time, but just in case, be safe and you won’t be sorry.

5. Before starting your online dating quest, make your computer safe. If anything happens to your computer you won’t be able to check out the dating sites. Make sure that you have a well trusted and safe firewall. There are plenty of free ones that do an excellent job. Also make sure that you have first class anti-virus protection for your incoming emails. Again, you can get very good protection totally free. Shop around and choose carefully.

Online dating can and should be fun. However, you do have to be careful in today’s crazy world. Take all the basic precautions for yourself, and don’t forget to protect your computer too. All you have to do after that is enjoy yourself!
